Floyd Jillson photographs, 1950-1992 (VIS 71)
Floyd E. Jillson (1926 -) was a photographer at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for the News Department from 1950 until 1955 after which he moved to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Magazine. The Floyd Jillson photographs are comprised of images Jillson took as staff photographer for the Atlanta Constitution and Journal Magazine, primarily during the 1960’s and 1970’s. The collection documents the Atlanta Metropolitan area and the state of Georgia.
The collection features images of the Atlanta skyline and the city’s landmarks such as Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, Atlanta Municipal Airport, the Chattahoochee River, the Fox Theater, the Governor’s Mansion, the Georgia State Capitol, Lakewood Park, Lenox Mall, Oakland Cemetery, Ponce de Leon Park, Piedmont Park, and the Woodruff Arts Center. Photographs of sites throughout the state of Georgia include images of the University of Georgia in Athens, beaches and shorelines in Savannah and Cumberland Island, Stone Mountain, the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, and numerous locations in North Georgia.
Other material in the collection chronicles major events in the professional and amateur world of sports including professional golf tournaments and southeastern college football games. Also included are photographs recording the funeral procession of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Ramblin’ Raft Race on the Chattahoochee River. The collection includes images of Hank Aaron, Ivan Allen, Jr., Julian Bond, Jimmy Carter, Max Cleland, Dwight Eisenhower, Howard Finster, Walter George, Billy Graham, Maynard Jackson, Bobby Jones, Martin Luther King, III, Coretta Scott King, Lester Maddox, Pete Maravich, Zell Miller, Dale Murphy, Carl Sanders, Herman Talmadge, Hershel Walker, Robert W. Woodruff, and Andrew Young. Of particular interest are photographs of Hank Aaron’s record-breaking 715th home run, Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign in 1976, and Dwight Eisenhower’s visits to Augusta, Georgia.
