Smith and Allen family oral histories, 1997, undated (MSS 886)

 

James Clifford Smith (1883-?) and Bonnie Smith (1893-1980) were born in Doraville, Georgia, to
James F. Smith (1859-1923) and Julia A. Smith (1857-1939). Charles and Bonnie served in the United
States Army during World War I. Bonnie Smith worked as a salesman for the Atlantic Company. James
C. Smith worked as a train caller and married Annie Mae Wingate (1893-1924); the couple had two
daughters, Dorothy (1917-2008) and Julia (1919-2007). After Annie's death, James married Minnie
Tinsley (1912-1984) and they had one daughter, Betty Jim (1930-2010). Dorothy married Robert StuartAllen (1916-2011), the nephew of Charles Fletcher Allen, in 1940 and had three daughters: Priscila, Phyllis, and Dottie. 

 

Charles Fletcher Allen (1878-1963) was born in North Carolina to W. M. Allen (1843-1925) and Julia
Allen (1850-1889). Charles served in the United States Marines Corp and was stationed in the Philippines
and Cuba. He married Lillian M. Allen (1876-1910) and they had one daughter, Beulah O. Allen
(1905-1992). After Lillian's death, Charles married Adeline Allen (1889-1992). Charles served for 34
years as a lieutenant in the Atlanta Police Department.

 

This collection contains three recorded interviews with three members of the Smith family:
Leroy Wingate (the uncle of Dorothy Smith Allen), Dorothy Smith Allen, and Robert Stuart Allen. The
interviews detail growing up in Georgia during the Great Depression.
