May 8th 1908 a fire broke out in the Cracker Factory at the northeast corner of Nelson Street and Madsion Avenue (now Spring Street). Due to high winds the fire quickly moved to the buildings on the south side of Mitchell Street. The damage by the fire was bounded by Nelson Street, Forsyth Street, Madison Avenue, and Mitchell Street. Forty two businesses were destroyed, and an additional 25 were severely damaged. Losses were totaled at 1,250,000 dollars making it the most destructive fire in Atlanta up to that date.
