Notes
Cumberland Island is located on the Atlantic Ocean of the coast of Georgia near the town of St. Marys. Originally inhabited by Timucuan Indians, the island fell under Spanish control and eventually private ownership. Prior to the islands National Park status in 1971 the island was primarily owned by the Carnegie family. Little Cumberland Island is still private land and is not open to the public.
