In 1932, Atlanta police officers Douglas Pool and H.D. Gaines stood trial for the vehicular homicide of two people. The officers had been intoxicated while driving and the crash fatally wounded Winona Patterson and her companion Joe Pafford. E.D. Rivers Jr., Elizabeth Cannon and Georgia Steward were also injured in the incident.
