Lurleen Wallace was the wife of Alabama Governor George Wallace, and the first female to be elected Governor of Alabama. Mrs. Wallace won the 1966 gubernatorial race on the grounds of extending her husband's tenure, as He was not eligible to serve a second consecutive term. She served as governor from 1967 until her death in May of 1968.
