During the American Civil War, the Battle of New Berne was fought on March 14, 1862, near the city of New Berne, North Carolina. New Berne is located in the center of Craven County and is set at the junction of the Trent and Neuse Rivers. Under the leadership of Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside, the Union forces captured and occupied New Berne until the end of the Civil War in 1865.
