Notes
The Bell system, from 1879 to 1984, was a federally regulated, legally sanctioned monopoly, based on the idea that the nation required a unified, standardized system to provide telephone and other public utilities with acceptable reliability. During the Bell System years Georgia was served by the operating company Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company.
