Notes
John Brown Gordon (1832-1904) was a Confederate military leader, a Democratic politician, and ardent defender of the Lost Cause. He began his service in the Confederate army as an untrained captain and ultimately became a major general in the Army of Northern Virginia. He later represented Georgia as a United States Senator from 1872 to 1880 and from 1891 to 1897. Between these terms of service, he served as Georgia's governor from 1886 to 1890.
